Disposable electrodes based on filtered nanomaterials.

Summary of the technology

A Spanish research Group from Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry and Chemical Departments at University of Alcalá (Spain) has designed and developed different disposable electrodes constituted exclusively by conducted nanomaterials for analytical measurement of electroactive molecules for (bio-) sensoric in relevant areas such as health, agri-food and environmental.
The group is looking for companies in the chemistry, clinical, agri-food and environmental sectors to reach licensing agreements or collaboration and commercial agreements for technical assistance.

New and innovative aspects

-It is not need of use ink that can reduce or modify the electrochemical signal, in contrast with screen-printed technology.

- It allows the disposition of increased surface / amount of nanomaterial avoiding its losses that they would occur in the transfer process by pressure of the other approach and which the other does not have.

Main advantages of its use

-Possible use of all types of conductor nanomaterials as an exclusive electrode support without chemical additives and without using hydraulic presses.

-Simple and versatile technology (allows different electronic geometry) and can be exploited commercially.

-It is not need any sophisticated equipment for their development.

-It allows exploring the excellent properties of nanomaterials to obtain an improvement of the analytical detection in target molecules, due to there is no need of any type of binder, being the nanomaterial the only transducer material.

Specifications

The analytical measurement has been important to progress in various areas of medicine, environment and industry. The disposable electrochemical electrodes (screen-print-technology) stand out because of its low cost and simplicity in electrical transduction.

The carbon nanomaterials among which are included, graphene and carbon nanotubes are one of the most important groups in the field of analytical detection, due to their excellent superficial properties, involving a much improved detection in terms of selectivity, sensitivity and reproducibility of chemical measurements.

Although commercial availability of electrodes constituted  by only nanomaterials is zero, being applied mainly in the field of telecommunications, it has developed a novel technology employing carbon nanotubes of simple wall through which the material is embedded by direct pressure on a hard and non-conductive support  by the use of hydraulic presses. The present invention provides an ideal alternative for the development of new electrodes based on nanomaterials conductive without any sophisticated equipment for its development. The most important characteristic for the development of this technology is the use of nanomaterials which are good electrical conductors.

The invention consists in the design and development of two types of electrodes:

1) Working electrodes, based on nanomaterials drivers for use in conventional electrochemical cell, miniaturized or microfluidics.

2) Electrodes based on conductor nanomaterials which have, working and auxiliary electrodes of the conductor nanomaterial and a silver reference electrode, for using in gout.
