Synthetic bone substitute with antimicrobial properties (antibacterial and antifungal).

Summary of the technology

The offered product is a material used for reconstruction of skeletal system bone with long-term antimicrobial operation, in contrast to the pure hydroxyapatite most widely used in regenerative medicine. The resulting materials can be designed in many industries, but the emphasis is mainly focused on medical, dental and pharmaceutical applications.

Description of the technology

Researchers from Cracow University of Technology have developed a new method for the production of calcium phosphate with hydroxyapatite structure modified with silver in the form of nanoparticles and ions. Natural calcium phosphate with hydroxyapatite crystal structure is a component of bone and teeth. Synthetic hydroxyapatite (HA) has long been known and from about two decades it is used in orthopedic surgery in skeletal reconstruction, dental treatment of periodontal disease etc.

Specifications

Infections associated with the implanted material are a major cause of reoperation. The presence of the implant inside the body will interfere with the patient's defense immune system as well influence the doses of antibiotics that are necessary to prevent against infection. Silver-modified biomaterials are effective antimicrobial agents against many kinds of bacteria. Pathogenic microorganisms cannot develop resistance mechanisms against silver particles as opposed to antibiotics, therefore, nanomaterials are an alternative to drugs without side effects. Biomaterials with silver have another significant feature – they exhibit high activity against bacteria, viruses and fungi, but low toxicity against human cells. These materials eliminate viruses and bacteria that cause disease, accelerate the healing of damaged tissues and strengthen the immune system. Structure and properties studies of hydroxyapatite containing silver with antibacterial properties showed that silver in ionic form is very slowly released into the implant surrounding environment, causing long-term antibacterial effect. Hydroxyapatite without the silver addition is now widely used to fill bone defects in orthopedics and dentistry. It is worth to mentioning that natural hydroxyapatite is main inorganic component of bones and teeth. Currently, there are any commercial products based on silver-modified hydroxyapatite on Polish and global market. According to above, the proposed solution has substantial and economic justification. The preparation process of hydroxyapatite containing silver (in nanometric or ionic form) is an important step towards creating a generation of bioactive materials for applications in medicine and dentistry. They could become the basis for the development of new implant or dental materials which have a very high chance of commercialization.

Main advantages of its use

  • Silver-modified biomaterials are effective antimicrobial agents against many kinds of bacteria. Pathogenic microorganisms cannot develop resistance mechanisms against silver particles as opposed to antibiotics, therefore, nanomaterials are an alternative to drugs without side effects. Current biomaterials market creates an opportunity for innovators, on condition that the new products will have the better properties, but also will be offered at a lower price. Our solutions meet both conditions and we estimate that the final product made by the developed technologies will be approximately 20 - 30% cheaper than hydroxyapatite already available on the market.
