Novel pharmaceutical composition in the treatment of infections and inflammation of epithelia

Summary of the technology

Chemerin is a small protein with very high capabilities. It plays an important role in migration of the immune cells into tissues during inflammation and also has an antibacterial and antifungal properties. Chemerin is secreted by the adipose cells, simultaneously it stimulates their cell division. This is important in metabolic diseases, such as in diabetes and obesity. However, the role of chemerin is not limited to the above-mentioned functions. Chemerin plays an important role in the regulation of metabolism, either by influencing distribution of the adipose cells and regulation of production and secretion of insulin by pancreatic cells.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMP) are a group of low molecular weight (from 20 to 60 amino acids) of compounds commonly found in nature. Some of them (such as defensins and cathelicidin) are produced by a human body and used as pharmaceuticals. Due to the increasing number of strains of the antibiotic resistance, AMP compounds are considered medically attractive as an alternative to antibiotics. This is related to the mode of action of AMP to bacteria, which is based significantly on the rapid bacterial cell membrane "perforating", which results in limited ability of bacteria to develop resistance to these compounds. The group of these promising compounds for medical includes a chemerin peptide composition, which is the subject of the present invention. The advantage of application of chemerin peptides as the antibacterial agents, instead of modified proteins, is a possibility to separate the function of antimicrobial proteins from other functions such as migration of immune cells. Other functions are because localized in other regions of chemerin protein and they could cause the undesirable or unpredictable effects during the treatment.

Description of the technology

The subject of the offer is a new pharmaceutical composition comprising chemerin peptides. The offered composition may find a variety of biomedical applications, including the treatment of pathological epithelia, in particular for use against bacterial and fungal infections and in treatment of diseases associated with inflammation of the skin, lungs or gastrointestinal tract.

The advantage of application of chemerin peptides as the antibacterial agents, instead of modified proteins, is a possibility to separate the function of antimicrobial proteins from other functions such as migration of immune cells. Other functions are because localized in other regions of chemerin protein and they could cause the undesirable or unpredictable effects during the treatment.

  • The offered composition may find a variety of biomedical applications, including the treatment of pathological epithelia, in particular for use against bacterial and fungal infections and in treatment of diseases associated with inflammation of the skin, lungs or gastrointestinal tract.
