Desired outcome

As a participant of the upcoming symposium “GCCIR Matchmaking Symposium” organized by the GCCIR and Innoget next 19 November 2018 in Barcelona (Spain), the company Evolution Engineering. is seeking for European partners to meet at the Barcelona event to develop a joint R&D project.

Evolution Engineering (EVO) was founded back in 2011 by a group of like-minded professionals with a history of developing and commercializing cutting-edge telemetry technology for the downhole market.

Evolution Engineering started with the aim to be known as one of the most advanced, innovative, and rapid response engineering teams dedicated to building better telemetry and communication systems for the drilling industry. The company’s focus is to develop in-house, next-generation communication and sensor technology, deploying the innovative technology to the proper client base, resulting in positive and effective impacts on their businesses.

Currently, Evolution holds 83 unique patents filled. The company has an additional 36 drafted patents currently under review by the engineering team and are constantly striving to generate intellectual property central to Alberta.

In case you are interested in meeting Baseband Technologies Inc. at the Barcelona event to discuss a potential collaboration, please register for free to the symposium through the orange button provided above.

Details of the Innovation Need

Evolution Engineering has been working with Inpetro Energy to develop a next generation Measurement While Drilling (MWD) tool for use in land based oil and gas exploration. The technology is currently commercially available exclusively through Inpetro’s operational division distribution arm, and has quickly gained acceptance with some of the largest O&G operators across North America.

EVO ONE: Unified Telemetry, Evolution Engineering’s first product, has broken several boundaries but at the heart of the development was creating a next generation industry leading MWD technology focused on high Reliability. To chance the industries current MWD market, EVO had to rely on innovation that are both simple and efficient in design, assembly, use and service.

Drawing on the team’s extensive industry experience, known Service Quality and Reliability issues were identified; where leading offensive failures- including those that EVO experienced repeatedly in the company’s past, were designed out of the system. Evolution Engineering also identified and addressed the human factor related issues that arise with complex designs and products that do not take the end users’ needs into consideration.

Operation of an MWD tool requires adaptation to multiple environments and changing drilling conditions. To do so, EVO ONE is fully automated to make real-time smart decisions both downhole and through a closed loop uphole/downhole EM communication with the surface system. Decisions are made in real-time based on changing drilling conditions so as to maximize signal to surface while maintaining data rates and decreasing battery consumption, or by altering data rates to ensure signal is maintained – with two fully configurable telemetries downhole EVO ONE has the ability to adapt, and the smarts downhole and uphole to know when and why.

Evolution is looking to develop a 4-pole brushless DC motor with better-suited efficiencies for the company’s application. Currently, EVO is running a non-purpose built motor that prevents their technology from operating to the highest efficiency and cost benefit.

Evolution will be looking to find a development partner that can design a motor that meets the company’s Normal-Operation; Preferred RPM; Voltage at input to motor connection block (not voltage of input to controller); optimized Current/RMS Current; Stall condition; Full Use Case of Anti-Jam process; Max-current.

The company will be pairing this with a Harmonic Drive 100:1 gearbox, or a 50:1 gearbox.

Preferences / Requirements for Potential European Partner(s)

The following are the important aspects Baseband Technologies is looking for a potential European partnership:

  • EVO is looking at a partner that is quick to market with a reliable, and well-executed design.
  • The partner must be skilled in high pressure, high-temperature brushless DC motor design, preferably experience in downhole oil and gas applications, and development of robust products capable of high shock/vibration survival.
  • The partner must be capable of either manufacturing the product, or in outsourcing the product intellectual property for purchase of license by Evolution.

About German-Canadian Centre for Innovation and Research (GCCIR)

The German-Canadian Centre for Innovation and Research (GCCIR) is a multilateral initiative for the development of German-Canadian, and more broadly European-Canadian, research and business relations. It is based in Edmonton, Alberta and is located in the TEC Edmonton Business Incubator. The Centre provides support for the exchange of information, development of networks, and the establishment and cultivation of collaborative partnerships in academia, business, and industry.

The GCCIR, along with Innoget, is the co-organizer of the GCCIR Matchmaking Symposium in Barcelona, to be held on November 19, 2018 in Barcelona (Spain). With the support of the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) and ACCIÓ, the Agency for Business Competitiveness of Catalonia, the symposium is a unique opportunity for all Spanish organizations to connect with Albertan partners to jointly develop R&D projects eligible to receive funding under the Alberta-Europe Technology Collaboration Fund as well as other funding programs to be presented during the event.

From the Alberta side, roughly 15 to 20 Albertan SMEs (small-to-medium sized enterprises) will participate in the symposium for the purpose of meeting potential R&D partners based in Spain. Furthermore, during the event, the German-Canadian Centre for Research (GCCIR), the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) and ACCIÓ will present the available funding programs that both Spanish and Albertan partners could apply to fund the resulting projects related to the industrial sectors below:

Nanotechnology // Geospatial // Drones // Cleantech // Health and e-Health // ICT // IOT // Materials // Energy
