As a participant of the upcoming symposium “GCCIR Matchmaking Symposium” organized by the GCCIR and Innoget next 19 November 2018 in Barcelona (Spain), the company Applied Quantum Materials Inc. (AQM) is seeking European partners to meet at the Barcelona event to develop a joint project for commercialization.
AQM is specifically interested in collaborating with research-active companies looking at a joint venture to incorporate new advanced materials towards commercialization of advanced products such as Li-ion battery materials, optical displays, lighting products, nanocomposite polymers and nanofabrication facilities using electron beam lithography.

AQM is a spin-off from the University of Alberta and became operational in September 2016 as a private corporation. AQM is a world leader in the research, development, and synthesis of biocompatible silicon quantum dots (SiQDs) and Group IV semiconductor nanoparticles for applications in nanofabrication, sensing, energy, displays, security and bio-imaging. AQM is working with numerous Tier 1 corporations on custom synthesis and development of specialty nanomaterials.
AQM is the only company worldwide commercializing silicon quantum dots for a variety of applications. One application is the manufacture of quantum dot trace sensors for explosive detection and chemicals. This sensor is currently under evaluation by Transport Canada, the RCMP and the Department of National Defense.
AQM is active in the development of silicon nanostructured materials for improved tire performance. A prototype silica nanofiber that can be easily manufactured at low temperatures has been developed as a replacement for precipitated silica. AQM is looking to demonstrate the technology with tire manufacturers and as a reinforcement for polymers.
AQM designs and has developed several nanocomposite polymers with unique physical properties. One nanocomposite is being evaluated as an optical film for displays. Another is being integrated into a security application. AQM is looking for partners in the solid-state lighting and display sectors.
These hybrid materials also have applications as luminescent solar concentrators for building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). AQM is undertaking a developmental project to optimize the parameters and scale the process. AQM is also looking for glass and solar window companies to partner with.
AQM has developed graphene/silicon aerogels and is exploring partnerships with advanced materials companies or Lithium-ion battery manufacturers.
AQM sells a polymer resist for extreme UV, electron-beam and helium-ion semiconductor lithography and nanoimprint lithography to nanofabrication research centers around the world. We are looking for more applications and developers.
AQM is developing in vivo bio imaging agents that incorporate our silicon quantum dots.
AQM has received interest and sales from a number of European nanofabrication facilities for its electron-beam resist. AQM’s objective is to partner with companies, design, develop and incorporate their nanomaterials and co-develop new products. AQM aims to be an advanced materials supplier to leading end users in the display/lighting, battery, tire manufacturers, solar windows, chemical sensing and nanofabrication centers.

The German-Canadian Centre for Innovation and Research (GCCIR) is a multilateral initiative for the development of German-Canadian, and more broadly European-Canadian, research and business relations. It is based in Edmonton, Alberta and is located in the TEC Edmonton Business Incubator. The Centre provides support for the exchange of information, development of networks, and the establishment and cultivation of collaborative partnerships in academia, business, and industry.
The GCCIR, along with Innoget, is the co-organizer of the GCCIR Matchmaking Symposium in Barcelona, to be held on November 19, 2018 in Barcelona (Spain). With the support of the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) and ACCIÓ, the Agency for Business Competitiveness of Catalonia, the symposium is a unique opportunity for all Spanish organizations to connect with Albertan partners to jointly develop R&D projects eligible to receive funding under the Alberta-Europe Technology Collaboration Fund as well as other funding programs to be presented during the event.
From the Alberta side, roughly 15 to 20 Albertan SMEs (small-to-medium sized enterprises) will participate in the symposium for the purpose of meeting potential R&D partners based in Spain. Furthermore, during the event, the German-Canadian Centre for Research (GCCIR), the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) and ACCIÓ will present the available funding programs that both Spanish and Albertan partners could apply to fund the resulting projects related to the industrial sectors below:
