The submission process for new proposals is closed. Proposals submitted before the deadline will follow the standard evaluation process.

Desired outcome

Fater is looking for partners able to solve technical challenges in order to develop a super absorbent polymer - SAP - material from sustainable sources with good fluid handling properties, able to replace the currently used raw material.
The sustainable SAP should have similar absorption properties of the commercially available SAP (produced from non-sustainable petrochemical sources) and guarantee a significantly reduced environmental impact, evaluated via Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

Details of the Innovation Need

In the business of absorbent products, the main materials composing the product cores are: fluff (i.e.: defibrated cellulose pulp) and superabsorbent polymer (SAP).

In particular diapers are usually made of an absorbent core which consists of a porous matrix of cellulose fluff in which granules of superabsorbent polymer (SAP) are blended. The SAP absorbs and retains most of the liquid (around 40 times its own weight of saline solution), getting bigger and gelly.

Fater is looking for partners able to solve technical challenges in order to develop a SAP material from sustainable sources with good fluid handling properties, able to replace the currently used raw material.

The sustainable SAP should have similar absorption properties of the commercially available SAP (produced from non-sustainable petrochemical sources) and guarantee a significantly reduced environmental impact, evaluated via Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

Known critical parameters for the SAP are the following:

- Particle size distribution

- Retention capacity

- Absorption under pressure

- Speed of absorption

Already known solutions:

  • Biopolymers from fermentation-based bioprocess of renewable feedstocks like glucose or glycerol, using a companion chemistry platform based on gamma polyglutamic acid
