  The infestation by fleas and ticks on dogs and cats is a major cause of concern for pet owners around the world. Although there are various technologies for either preventing fleas and ticks (insect development/growth inhibitors) or killing adult flea and tick populations, these are usually pharmaceutical/therapeutic solutions that can be taken orally or harsh chemicals/topical drugs that are applied to the skin of dogs and cats. These can potentially cause various side effects and for the various topical solutions can also present application and retention ifficulties. The ability to prevent infestations of fleas and ticks through natural food ingredients or food supplements would therefore provide a new complimentary, safe and effective route to control this infestation problem.   We are seeking a dispenser/applicator that can handle a thick, gelatinous, pre-formed professional-quality
  adhesive. It needs to allow a neat, consistent, and smooth way of applying an appropriate amount of adhesive without the hassles of mixing or pouring. We recognize that a new adhesive formulation may be necessary.
  
  Currently, we use a polymer dispersion of polyvinyl pyrrolidone. We modify the formulation with sodium and
  potassium stearates - fatty acids/soaps - and saponify the mixture with a sodium hydroxide solution. While the
  stearates thicken the adhesive and provide an even "flow," they bring the compression/shear strength of the
  formulation down to 400-600 lbs. (Many thickeners or fillers reduce the bond strength of polymer dispersions used as adhesives.) We would like the professional-level adhesive to dispense just as well, but offer a compression shear strength of 2000-2500 lbs. Lesser strengths may also be of interest.
  
  The attached table shows our bond strength objectives.
  
  We recognize that part of dispensing the adhesive smoothly and consistently depends as much on the design of the dispenser as it does on the viscosity and flow of the adhesive.
  
  We're after easy-to-use, convenient application, a smooth coating, and minimal need for clean up.
  
  The substrates to be joined include such porous substrates as wood and engineered wood products, and various non-porous surfaces such as metal and plastic.   Nitrates and nitrites occur naturally in the environment, but can pose health risks in sufficient quantities or when reacting with additional compounds. Our client has identified the presence of Nitrate (NO₃) and Nitrite (NO₂) within their manufacturing process, as a result of the materials processed and the biological environment of the process. Nitrite is more of an issue to our client than Nitrate, and is formed by the following conversion reaction:
  [NO3]- → [NO2]-
  They are therefore keen to manage Nitrite levels (whether through controlling the above reaction or by removal of Nitrate or Nitrite) without affecting the process or the end products.

  The manufacturing process produces an organic-based liquid extract that is subsequently concentrated. The client would like to remove all traces of nitrate/nitrite from the solution – given the viscosity of the resulting concentrate (40-50% dissolved solids), they believe removal before concentration is preferable (e.g. in a batch and/or continuous process). The concentrate is then applied to organic solid material – managing Nitrate and Nitrite levels at this stage is also desirable. At all stages, nitrifying bacteria (aerobic and anaerobic) convert nitrate to the nitrite, so removing or inhibiting the bacteria can prevent nitrites forming, albeit for a short period of time.
  
  We are therefore interested in separate (or combinable) solutions to prevent nitrite formation in liquid or organic solid material, and/or selectively remove nitrate/nitrite from liquid or dry material (i.e. not other compounds such as flavours). It is important to note that any solutions should not involve temperatures that exceed 60°C.
  
  The client company is searching for solutions that are realisable in the short to medium term – whilst relevant research could be of interest, solutions that already exist or only require development for their application are of primary interest. They are able to provide support for scaling up a prototype system, but would want to see proof of concept at least. We are willing to consider any reasonable commercial arrangements, including licensing in, purchasing, strategic alliances and partnering arrangements. Read more

The requirement is for a significant reduction in the volume of the equipment, and so the client is therefore interested in enabling technology and solutions, for example:
  
  - Improved membrane or pre-filtration equipment (current options use almost 50% of the footprint/weight)
  - Options not requiring pre-filtration to achieve the required salinity
  - Alternative desalination technologies to reverse osmosis
  
  The client is interested in a range of solutions that can be scaled up or down, dependent on the application – we are therefore interested to learn of solutions that can process smaller or larger quantities of feed water, or perhaps those that could provide less than 70% reduction, but could have potential for this search.
  
  The following utilities do NOT need to be included in the footprint (instrument/process air, power generation, nitrogen and plant water (if required), but the following DO need to be included (2 weeks chemical storage, any required water storage and tankage).
  
  The company will consider all potential solutions, but is most interested in those solutions that have been proven in some way (including lab concept, pilot plant and industrial application). Potential solutions will need to be tested intensively before deployment, and so those solutions that have already been proven will be of key interest to the company.   Given a big list of products with their characteristics, the algorithm should calculate the minimum clusters, grouping the product when possible and minimizing the cost of such clusters. Obviously, despite of the size of the problem, the algorithm should be able to find a solution in a sensible period of time. Each product will have a set of characteristics and it will be possible to merge it with other if both are compatible meeting a set of constraints. For each couple of products is necessary to analyze if they are compatible respecting the compatibility rules for each of their parameters and the cost of the merger. Every time two products are merged, the new one will be more restricted, so it implies to be more expensive to make (of course, the standardization will have other benefits, larger than the costs of the merger and out of the scope of the problem).
