  BACKGROUND
  Most methods of aiding digestive health involve absorbing an ingredient into the body via the digestive tract. Traditionally, these are nutrients, vitamins, probiotics, and medicines.
  
  We are not looking for ingredients like these that absorb into the body.
  
  Instead, we're looking for consumer-level devices that:
  1. Enter the digestive tract through the mouth, produce their effect, and then provably and documentably leave the body entirely; thereby ceasing their effect, or devices that
  
  2. Work from outside the body to improve digestion.
  
  For example, your solution might be a pad that vibrates the stomach area for a certain period after eating at a certain frequency, thus improving the nutritional uptake of the consumer's normally eaten food. Or perhaps your solution is ingested with meals, but binds with and removes some percentage of fat consumed during the meal, and eliminates that fat from the body, with 100% of the substance recovered once it has passed the digestive tract.

  A new cereal crop, tritordeum, has been developed from the hybridization of pasta wheat and a wild barley species (Hordeum chilense).
  
  With our challenge we are looking for an approach and appropriate technology for screening tritordeum germplasm (a collection of breeding lines) to identify components of nutritional or health relevance. The outcome we look for is the identification of variability in characters present in tritordeum which offer potential for the development of functional food products.
  
  An important aspect is the identity or level of these components should differ from those already present in conventional cereals. For example, tritordeum contains lutein as its major carotenoid antioxidant. Lutein is also the major carotenoid in bread wheat, but is present at a 10-fold higher level in tritordeum which gives the opportunity to develop innovative products which are clearly differentiated from wheat products at the level of lutein content and functionality.
  
  The new cereal resembles bread wheat and its agronomic performance and yield is similar to wheat. However, a number of properties have been identified which offer the possibility of developing new functional food products. Among the properties currently identified are included exceptionally high levels of the antioxidant carotenoid lutein which is strongly implicated in eye health, high levels of soluble fibre, high protein, microelements, variant starch types, etc.
  
  These properties of interest have been identified from the analysis of a limited number of elite lines of tritordeum which have been selected on the basis of having food processing qualities suiting them for specific food applications (e.g. bread, biscuit etc).
  
  The tritordeum lines which have been tested, however, represent only a small fraction of the germplasm (pool of breeding lines) of the cereal which in total numbers some 250+ lines derived from crosses between different parental genotypes. This collection offers a breadth of genetic diversity far exceeding that present in the breeding pool of conventional cereals (whose genetic variability has been reduced during the thousands of years of selection and breeding following the early domestication of these crops.

  1. The most important red fruit soils derive their colour from the fruits of tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) and various types of pepper (Capsicum annuum).
  2. The most important carotenoids that we need to remove/bleach are lycopene, beta carotene, phytoene, capsanthin and capsorubin.
  3. Classical detergent bleach technology based on hydrogen peroxide or peracetic acid formation is too hydrophilic to be effective on carotenoids.
  4. Diacyl peroxide bleaching agents are very effective but not stable enough and not very selective for carotenoids vs dyes.
  5. Metal catalyst bleaches are also effective but also suffer from a lack of selectivity.
  6. Carotenoid soils are usually associated with lipids and/or fatty acids and these could be a species that is targeted.
  7. A previous approach pursued has been to use carotenoid binding peptides to direct bleaching chemistry to the soils, although this has not been commercialized.
  8. Carotenoids break down naturally via thermal, photo and enzymatic mechanisms. It might be possible to use formulated additives to accelerate these processes and some enzyme classes have already been evaluated without success.
  
  The novel material or technology solution provided should:
  
  1. Deliver consumer-noticeable benefits in a single laundry or automatic dishwashing cycle
  2. Be suitable for incorporation into liquid and solid detergent forms, with good stability over a 6 month shelf life
  3. Be sufficiently well-targeted to avoid damage to the integrity of fabrics, dishware or appliance parts.
  4. Be effective at low addition levels, i.e. <5% in product and at a cost appropriate for a detergent that has a final cost to consumer of ~20c per dose. i.e. Catalytic approaches are likely to be the most successful.

Our client has identified the presence of Nitrate (NO₃) and Nitrite (NO₂) within their manufacturing process, as a result of the materials processed and the biological environment of the process. Nitrite is more of an issue to our client than Nitrate, and is formed by the following conversion reaction:
  [NO3]- → [NO2]-
  They are therefore keen to manage Nitrite levels (whether through controlling the above reaction or by removal of Nitrate or Nitrite) without affecting the process or the end products.

  The manufacturing process produces an organic-based liquid extract that is subsequently concentrated. The client would like to remove all traces of nitrate/nitrite from the solution – given the viscosity of the resulting concentrate (40-50% dissolved solids), they believe removal before concentration is preferable (e.g. in a batch and/or continuous process). The concentrate is then applied to organic solid material – managing Nitrate and Nitrite levels at this stage is also desirable. At all stages, nitrifying bacteria (aerobic and anaerobic) convert nitrate to the nitrite, so removing or inhibiting the bacteria can prevent nitrites forming, albeit for a short period of time.

Talc in particular produces a stiffer plastic, but the resulting composite is relatively dense. Glass fiber can provide similar stiffness at even lower usage levels, but presents other challenges such as undesirable surface defects. Every additive is a balance.
  We'd like to consider new additives, modifiers, or agents -- ingredients that are not commonly added to thermoplastic -- in a search to improve material properties and make plastics stiffer, lighter, and give them higher heat resistance. We're especially open to materials in use in non-plastic industries: concrete and aggregates, ceramics and porcelains, glass, gels, nanotechnology, and similar industries that may put organic or inorganic additives in their mix.
  We realize that materials not commonly used in thermoplastics will be unlikely to have thermoplastic-oriented performance data to show us.
  
  CONSTRAINTS
  Your solution should be a high-strength inorganic or organic compound having the following characteristics:
  - Tensile modulus > 50GPa
  - Aspect ratio > 20:1 (can be plates or fibers. An aspect ratio implies a fibrous material; your solution need not be fibrous.)
  - Structure survives up to 300 degrees C.

  The choice of modified release dosage form for drugs is mainly determined by their physicochemical properties. In general, modified release systems are considered unsuitable for APIs which undergo extensive first-pass metabolism. The lack of technologies that fulfill the function of delivering such actives puts limitations on the ability to achieve further therapeutic benefits and consumer benefit for these classes of APIs.
  
  Technical Requirements
  The target is therefore to access orally delivered modified release drug delivery systems that extend the efficacy of certain APIs by avoiding and/or overcoming pre-systemic metabolism. Potential dosage forms include tablet, liquid, capsule, granules, etc. The release may occur in the gastrointestinal tract ranging from the oral cavity to the large intestine. There will be a requirement to potentially meet a variety of local and/or global regulatory requirements.
  
  Additional Supporting Data Required:
  Mandatory :
  • A theoretically convincing principle that could enable extended efficacy over a certain period of time (12 hours or more), AND
  • Preliminary data/models (not limited to dissolution test) that demonstrate proof of principle against APIs that face similar issues described above.
  Preferred:
  • In vivo data that demonstrates the proof of the principle against APIs described above.
  Desirable:
  • Compatibility with other drug delivery platforms.
  
  The materials should also meet the following requirements for incorporation into a consumer product:
  – Compatible with typical Health Care product packaging and storage
  – Not require storage or handling under special or inert conditions, e.g. under nitrogen or under oil.
  – Cost appropriate for consumer products (when incorporated at the required level). As examples, this means maximum £20/kg (GBP) for an ingredient incorporated at 1-5%, and maximum £250/kg (GBP) for an ingredient incorporated at <0.1%
  – Technologies must be capable of withstanding any process stresses e.g. temperature without chemical degradation or any adverse effects
  – Technology must not reduce the existing quality of the user’s experience e.g. poor taste, smell etc.
  – Able to be incorporated into current products using simple batch mixing at room temperature and atmospheric pressure with minimal heating/cooling and no or minimal changes required to current clean-down processes.
  – Not be harmful for human use (not classified or suspected to be a toxin, carcinogen, mutagen, irritating to the human respiratory system) with respect to the concentrations used in the final product. Not harmful to the environment (including not being a photo-reactive volatile organic compound).
  – Ideally offer scope for patent protection with the desired application and format.
  – Not negatively affecting the efficacy or aesthetics of the final product.
