Details of the Tech Request :

The use of Teflon surfaces is common in the product agro-food manufacturing. The most relevant characteristics offer: high impact absortion capacity, high temperature resistance (200C), good slip properties and prevents food adhesion above all for those which its texture and consistency is sticky. Teflon’s substitution for other metallic materials (mainly stainless steel) has not worked since the food sticks easily provoking incidents in the production line.

In the other hand, due to friction between the plastic surfaces and the mechanical parts of the line, plastic particles are formed which if incorporated in the food generate a risk for the consumer.

When the surface is of metallic origin (Iron, stainless steel), the post of a metallic detector at the end of the line prevents that the contaminated product reaches the consumer. Nevertheless, when the generated particle is of plastic origin the current systems (metallic detectors, X.Ray) do not work.

The objective of the challenge is to find suitable technological solutions that would let to identify plastic fragments (Teflon or similar) that accidentally have been incorporated in the food. The solution may be thought in different levels: some of the possibilities are:

1- To incorporate metallic charge to the plastic polymer (Teflon or similar), so in case of incorporation in the food it will be detected by a conventional metallic detector.

2- Alternative technology that could detect plastic materials in the food product

Tests performed with X-ray technology have not worked, this option is not accepted

Success criteria of winning proposals are:

- Minimal particle size that should detectable: 1mmx3mmm

- The proposed solution must work in a the production line with a production of 1200 units per minute.

The printers currently use a combination of plastic cylindrical rollers and small, metallic ‘jagged’ (or indented) wheels that simultaneously press down, pull and push the substrate to the appropriate position for printing, interim finishing/converting and eventual storage.The client is therefore searching for cost-effective components, advanced materials and designs that allow improved handling and control of wet and dry printed substrates (particularly gloss photo papers).

We are working with a leading technological company providing a range of printing solutions. The client is keen to optimise the overall printing experience for the user and has identified a performance issue, whereby current mechanical mechanisms to move and guide paper through the device can provide small, but noticeable marks on printed images.

Resulting marks include:

- Mechanical pressure marks / indentations and puncture marks from the metallic wheels
- Smudges / areas where the ink is transferred by the roller across the printed surface
- Dull sections of print where rollers impair the optical quality

Defect marks are particularly apparent as printing quality and speed increases, and applies to printers at the lower price range, where cost of components is an issue (higher value products are able to use the more expensive electrostatic/vacuum movement mechanisms). The client is therefore searching for cost-effective components, advanced materials and designs that allow improved handling and control of wet and dry printed substrates (particularly gloss photo papers). We are seeking a method (mechanical, chemical or coating) to reduce surface roughness of sinterised objects. This materials are polymeric or metallic and 3D complex. Initial roughness of the laser sinterised is 50 micron aprox (Ra), maximum acceptable roughnes is Ra 50nm.

Details of the Tech Request :

Laser sinterised products are obtained after a patterned laser irradiation of layers of fine powder (i.e polyamide PA12) that after cooling become solid. Currently all materials obtained have a rough surface. Several methods can be used to reduce this roughness. A method that combines mechanical polishing by friction of the pieces and abrasive inside a rotating tumble, together with suitable abrasive and the application of a coating is mostly used. Up to now, this method does not provide the final required roughness. Our goal is to obtain highly glossy surfaces, which require a low roughness (less than 50nm Ra).

The polishing process has should be cost and time effective.

Suggestion: Ultrasonic polishing could be considered if it can be demonstrated that is effective and can be totally automatic.

We are seeking small, easy to use, low cost flexible diagnostic indicators that can be incorporated onto consumer product packaging. Our main focus is on diagnosis of bad breath but we would also be interested in technology to detect diabetes or high cholesterol. For example a printable diagnostic strip on a tube of toothpaste for identifying halitosis (sulphur detector).

Desired - cost effective technology enabling the production of a low cost test that can be attached to product packaging and used easily by the consumer for confirmation of specific targeted diagnosis.

Process Gas Chromatography (PGC) has been the primary mainstay of online Gas Analysis for 50 years. PGC essentially (automatically) takes a complex process sample and separates the individual components before passing them individually past a detector. It is especially well suited to classic HPI applications where other technologies struggle to deliver, such as when measuring many similar hydrocarbons or trace hydrocarbons in a high hydrocarbon background. Ethylene/Olefin plants are particularly strong markets for PGC.

PGC is a strongly application expertise dependant technology involving complex (separating) column and detection design for different applications which is extremely demanding on technical personnel. The other significant limitation is time - components are not measured simultaneously, but rely on time to separate individual components which may typically take between 3 and 15 minutes. Modern control systems often require much faster component feedback for close process control.
