Therefore, contaminants derived from the use of conventional oxidising agents are not generated and hence, no need for the management of hazardous residues is applicable.

  In our days, active implanted devices are becoming increasingly and more and more widely used in therapeutics. In addition to the most frequently used pacemakers, cardiac defibrillators, drug delivery devices, neuro-stimulators, retina implants, hearing aids, incontinence management devices, bone growth stimulators and other devices are applied in order to extend the patients’ lifetimes and improve their life conditions. In light of the ongoing rapid development of electronics and medicine, the number of such implanted devices can be expected to grow even further. As the implantation of such active devices is both costly and risky and, in case of certain applications, their uninterrupted operation is essential, electricity necessary for their operation must be supplied on the long run and in a reliable manner.

  This work is performed using DNA provided by the client. We use prokaryotic expression systems (Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis) as well of a yeast expression system (Pichia pastoris). We apply high standards in implementing quality services both technically and procedurally, that ensures high purity of the proteins we produce.
  
  In Zurko Research we perform cloning, expression and purification of proteins in bacterial or yeast systems. We develop new enzymes with interesting activities for the industry and compare them with commercial enzymes.
  
  In Zurko Research we develop pilot tests of these new enzymatic activities not yet described for its use in the industry. We also search for new enzymes with industrial interest focusing in improving bioprocesses and biotransformations. We optimize different complex proteolytic bioprocesses for better utilization of by-products following European standards in quality and in environment impact. We investigate the valorisation of by-products and residues, searching for the economic convenience of the company first. We conduct pilot tests to obtain improved formulations of active peptides and amino acids with potential applications in different industrial sectors: feed, biomedicine, plant, food, etc.
  
  APPLICATIONS IN THE DAIRY INDUSTRY
  
  1) Ripening of cheeses: Lipases are used to accelerate the ripening of blue cheeses. For the production milk rennet, renins and pepsins are used.
  
  2) The use of enzymes in pastry and bakery such as Amylases, beta-Glucanases, Hemicellulases, and Xylanases produce more sugars for the fermentation and improve the quality and taste of the bread and bakery products.
  
  3) Total Hydrolyzed Whey for functional foods. By total biohydrolysis of whey an hydrolysate is obtained with high content of essential amino acids suited for human nutrition. Exo and broad spectrum Endoproteasas are used.
  
  4) For a clarifying effect of fruit juices and vegetables using various enzymes: Hemicellulases, Pentosanases, Cellulases, Xylanases and Pectinases. To remove the bitter taste of grapefruit juice because of the citrus peel alpha-L-Rahmanosidase and beta-Glucosidase are used.
  
  APPLICATIONS IN THE PRODUCTION OF FEED
  
  Production of feed products highly digestible. This can be achieved with the addition of certain enzymes in the animal feed, such as Glucanases, Xylanases, Amylases and Phytases (better absorption of phosphate)
  
  1 .- Use of enzymes for the degradation/treatment of cererals. Among these enzymes are: Amylases, Xylanases, Gluconases and Cellulases, mainly from microbial source.
  
  2 .- Use of microbial proteases to hydrolyze proteins, to obtain highly valued amino acids and peptides.
  
  3 .- Degradation of phytate by using Phytase of bacterial origin.
  
  APPLICATIONS IN MEAT AND FISH INDUSTRIES
  
  1) For tender and tasty meats. By enzymatic treatment of certain meat cuts using papain, Endo and Exo Peptidases as well as Acid Proteases a more tender meat is obtained.

It was proposed in the 1990s that methanol could efficiently replace fossil fuels as a means to store, distribute and supply energy. Methanol can serve as a raw material for the preparation of chemical feedstocks and is also a good fuel itself; so is dimethylether. Methanol is currently being produced from synthesis gas, directly obtained from gas or biomass.
  
  A much more sustainable approach to methanol synthesis consists in capturing carbon dioxide from atmosphere or from burning plants and treat it with hydrogen to form methanol, thereby closing the carbon cycle. Such processes have been reported and they most commonly suffer from low selectivity to methanol and/or conversion of carbon dioxide to methanol, therefore requiring sofisticated process plants with high associated operating costs.
  
  The developed process allows for the preparation of methanol and DME from carbon dioxide in high yields using well-known catalysts.
  
  The Institution is searching for industrial partners to further develop these technologies from the laboratory scale to the commercial plant, jointly or independently.

- Description of the technology offer :
  
  A group of researchers from 3 public universities has developed an ohmic heating reactor for chemical synthesis, particularly in aqueous media. This reactor and the heating method found application in organic and inorganic synthesis, preparation of organometallic materials, synthesis of nanoparticles and polymers, being applicable in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. The simplicity and low cost of the reactor, its low heat capacity and thermal inertia, the fast and uniform heating, high efficiency, easy maintenance and handling, as well as the possibility of visual monitoring of the reaction evolution and the possibility of adding reagents during the course of the reaction, make the use of this reactor a versatile and advantageous option for synthetic procedures.

  In ohmic heating electrical energy is dissipated in heat with a very high efficiency (electrodes in contact with the reaction medium), resulting in fast and uniform heating and in the increase of charged species movement. As in the case of the heating with microwave radiation, electrical energy is transformed into thermal energy. However, on contrary of heating with microwave radiation (penetration depth of microwave radiation in absorbing media is limited) the penetration depth is virtually unlimited and the extent of heating is regulated only by the spatial uniformity of electrical conductivity throughout the reaction medium and the time spent in the ohmic reactor. Thus, the direct scaling of the ohmic heating for the pilot or industrial scale shouldn’t have the limitations presented by microwave radiation heating.
