  We are working with a large European food products company, specialising in innovative ingredients to ‘help you cook’ – their range of ambient products includes:-
  - ‘Wet’ food (soups, broths, vegetable sauces and ready meals)
  - ‘Dry’ foods and seasoning ingredients (dried soups, stock cubes, seasoning powders)
  These products assist consumers to prepare tasty and nutritious meals that have a natural and traditional ‘home-cooked’ flavour. Whilst these flavours are important to the consumer, we recognise the consumer’s desire for improvement in both the nutritional and sensorial profile of the products, as well as a reduction in the use of wasteful or eco-unfriendly packaging. Therefore, we are interested finding technologies / products / processes in the following areas:-
  
  New methods to sterilise ‘wet’ products which minimises the negative impact on freshness of flavour, nutritional content, colour, taste and texture. Specifically we are looking for non-thermal processes to achieve ‘commercial sterility’.
  
  Traditionally heat treatments are used to sterilise the products, either UHT process or retorting. These treatments negatively affect the colour, taste and nutritional content of the products - especially for ‘non-cooked’ products such as gazpacho; cheese-based or light-coloured sauces; vegetable based products.
  
  We are interested to find new, state-of the-art non-thermal sterilisation methods / technologies which will improve the nutritional and sensorial profile of the products.
  
  Example alternatives include:-
  - Pulsed electric fields, high hydrostatic pressure, ultra-high pressure homogenisation, plasma sterilisation, etc.
  
  Potential solutions should:-
  - Retain the nutritional values and textural qualities of the ingredients
  - Provide a shelf life of 9-12 months
  - Avoid antioxidants / maintain a clean label
  - Be applicable to existing packaging such as cans, glass, Tetrapack, etc.
  
  Innovative flexible packaging materials which are more ‘natural’ and sustainably sourced, involving less wastage and increased recyclability etc. Paper-based technologies are especially of interest, but biopolymers will also be considered.
  
  Presently much of the client’s flexible food packaging involves multilayer structures (usually including aluminium and / or plastic materials) which are not easily recyclable and are perceived as not natural by the consumer.
  
  We are seeking novel, improved ‘active’ paper-based packaging innovations and biopolymer materials for dry soup pouches and stock cube (compressed & moulded) wrappings. Solutions could be modified paper with enhanced barrier properties (moisture, gases, aromas, oil resistance) through the use of surface treatments, additives, etc.
  
  The packaging materials must provide:-
  - Adequate stiffness for standard manufacturing processes
  - Medium / high barrier properties

An example being woven PET (Polyethylene Terapthalate), where the required optical clarity is good, but the woven process is slow and expensive.   BACKGROUND
  
  The hand is the number one path that spreads infection. Humans constantly touch objects and rub skin and mucous membranes around the eyes, nose, and mouth. Bacteria and viruses easily make the trip in both directions.
  
  We want to interrupt that duplex transmission at the hand, thus preventing the spread of infection. And we would like to do this in ways that are soothing to the skin of the hand -- for example, ways that won't cause skin chapping or chafing the way that frequent hand-washing will. We're seeking to offer these qualities in a product that is more than simply an "improved" formula. We want easily differentiated systems and techniques.
  
  For example, hand cleanliness is a major component of the problem. However, simply offering another alcohol-based hand-sanitizing product is not satisfactory to us for several reasons: There are many on the market, they may have an objectionable odor, and in some cases, they are flammable. People must make a special effort to use them --an effort they may not be willing to make as frequently as necessary.
  
  Classic soap-and-water approaches are not satisfactory either, as residue needs to be washed off. Soaps strip the lipids from the skin surface and may cause roughening; water can expose the skin to chapping, chafing, or cracking, especially in cold weather. In either the case of alcohol-based sanitizers or soap-and-water washing, compliance is an issue. People generally do not sanitize their hands frequently enough. They continue to touch objects, and the cycle of infection transmission remains unbroken.
  
  We're looking for a method, device, or ingredient that will kill, remove, repel, and continue to provide residual effects against hand-borne bacteria, viruses, and spores. We're looking for 3 orders of magnitude reduction in hand-borne bacteria.
  
  Additionally, we're looking for new ways of delivering the actives that enhance efficacy, offer a broader killing spectrum, are milder or gentler to the hands and skin, and offer improvements in environmental profile.
  
  In your proposed solution, consider the issue of compliance: When and where is it convenient to sanitize one's hands? Convenience is a big determinant of whether people get the benefit of clean hands. Consider delivery: Should the method consist of a gel, a liquid, a solid, or some other state? Should the solution include a device? Consider how a consumer can be certain that his hands are clean; what cue would he look for? And consider potential packaging issues: Packaging for your disinfection solution may be unique, but if it must be too costly, it may make no financial sense to provide that solution.
  
  The method we're seeking probably does not include a new active (although if your solution does include a new active, we still may wish to consider it).
  
  At minimum, you should have some preliminary data on your proposed solution showing that it is effective.

  Any additive changes the balance of properties for a given plastic. Talc, wollastonite, and glass fibers are the most usual conventional additives. Typically, talc can comprise 10-30% of a polypropylene by weight. While talc produces a stiffer plastic, the resulting composite is relatively dense. Glass fiber can typically provide the same stiffness as talc at lower use levels. While this provides a less dense composite, it presents other challenges -- such as undesirable surface defects.
  
  Our client's focus is on finding new ingredients, modifiers, or agents that improve the balance of properties of a thermoplastic (in particular, a polyolefin) over what is currently used today. The list of properties of interest includes:
  
  o Lighter weight
  o Higher modulus
  o Increase tensile strength
  o Improve impact resistance
  o Improve heat resistance
  o Decrease density (while maintaining the same or greater strength)
  o Minimize shrinkage
  o Improve surface finish, feel, optical appearance, and similar aesthetics
  o Improve scratch resistance and surface hardness
  o Improve stiffness
  o Minimize or eliminate abrasiveness (causes problems during extrusion)
  
  Ideally, your proposed additive would provide new properties in plastics or improvements over anything currently available; or, your additive would maintain current-equivalent properties but at a greatly reduced weight or much lower cost. For example, we would be interested in a technology that would enable a lower-cost polymer resin to replace a higher-cost resin without sacrificing quality, or a resin that would provide equivalent performance to a high-cost resin, but at a lesser quantity.
  
  Early-stage technologies are acceptable, but it is preferred that you have reduced the technology to practice at least at the lab scale.
  
  CONSTRAINTS
  
  Safety is important to us. Any new ingredient should not create safety hazards when inhaled during mixing or cause harm during incineration or processing.
  
  Your additive must work with an extruder (or possibly a compounder). An additive that is too abrasive -- over 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale -- may be harder than the steel in an extruder. We may make an exception for a true nano-scale additive.
  
  No restriction between organic or inorganic additives.
  
  We are NOT currently interested in new polymers (unless the polymer is added to polyolefins), new processes, or new machines.

  Current adhesives used in the field often require a compromise between being soft and gentle for easy non-damaging removal and being strong enough to ensure confident adhesion with good sealing to prevent leakage at the interface between the substrate and the adhesive.
  
  The challenge with many gentle non-toxic adhesives is that they do not handle moisture very well and can lose adhesion, causing leakage and damage to the weak substrate surface. The alternative strong adhesives are less flexible and are not easily removed without damaging the weak surface of the substrate. Moisture absorbing adhesives can be eroded easily and lose adhesion on moisture uptake.
  
  Balancing the compromise of adhesion versus ease of removal and then the moisture management versus erosion resistance is a constant challenge that we are seeking to resolve.
  
  Weak and sometimes damaged surfaces often consist of multiple layers with a top layer that is easily removable. It is affected by numerous internal and external factors that can change its surface structure. Factors such as pH, moisture environment and interface interactions all need to be considered when developing a suitable adhesive solution. The adhesive solution must be strong enough (peelforce is typically 0,1-10 N/25mm) to adhere but gentle enough not to cause further damage to the surface.

  o Non-toxic, non-irritating and non-sensitizing to human organisms
  o Proven and demonstrated adhesive properties on a laboratory scale - test and experimental data on different elements of the adhesive are required

  The choice of modified release dosage form for drugs is mainly determined by their physicochemical properties. In general, modified release systems are considered unsuitable for APIs which undergo extensive first-pass metabolism. The lack of technologies that fulfill the function of delivering such actives puts limitations on the ability to achieve further therapeutic benefits and consumer benefit for these classes of APIs.
  
  Technical Requirements
  The target is therefore to access orally delivered modified release drug delivery systems that extend the efficacy of certain APIs by avoiding and/or overcoming pre-systemic metabolism. Potential dosage forms include tablet, liquid, capsule, granules, etc. The release may occur in the gastrointestinal tract ranging from the oral cavity to the large intestine. There will be a requirement to potentially meet a variety of local and/or global regulatory requirements.
  
  Additional Supporting Data Required:
  Mandatory :
  • A theoretically convincing principle that could enable extended efficacy over a certain period of time (12 hours or more), AND
  • Preliminary data/models (not limited to dissolution test) that demonstrate proof of principle against APIs that face similar issues described above.

  Background
  The majority of consumer products focused on the treatment and relief from common aches, incidental pain, colds and flu are delivered orally, which may result in reduced speed of action due to digestion and associated metabolic action, as well as being somewhat inconvenient and unpleasant to take.
  
  Technologies and approaches are sought that enable treatments to be delivered to the consumer in a convenient and easy to use format, that also offer the potential benefits of being faster acting, lower dose and/or longer lasting.
  
  Technical Requirements
  Transdermal and transmucosal (buccal/sublingual) delivery present several challenges:
  
  • Most active ingredients are large molecules, with some being acidic in nature and having poor water solubility
  • It is necessary to be able to deliver 5-50mg of active within 15 minutes
  • The active ingredient must permeate the skin into the bloodstream, without causing irritation
  • Buccal/sublingual delivery mechanisms need to address potential taste issues, deal with a mucosal and salival environment and not get washed away
  • The approach may require permeation ingredients to help the active reach the bloodstream, either paracellularly (to avoid lipid interference in the tissues) or through the cell membranes themselves.
  
  The target is therefore to access technologies and approaches that can successfully deliver against these challenges, providing new or improved benefits vs. current approaches. Products already on the market for the treatment of common aches, incidental pain, colds and flu, or technologies that deliver topical or localised benefits only are not sought.
  
  It would be advantageous to also demonstrate the following:
  •In-vivo data that shows correlation with in-vitro studies – to demonstrate the action of the solution.
  
  The materials should also meet the following requirements for incorporation into a consumer product:
  
  1) Compatible with typical OTC Pharmaceutical product packaging and expected to be stable under global ambient temperature and humidity conditions for a period of 2 years.
  2) Not require storage or handling under special or inert conditions, e.g. under nitrogen or under oil.
  3) Soluble or readily dispersed in the formulations and not negatively affect or interfere with the properties of other components in the formulation.
  4) Technologies must be capable of withstanding any process stresses e.g. temperature without chemical degradation or any adverse effects
  5) Able to be able to be incorporated into current products using simple batch mixing at room temperature and atmospheric pressure with minimal heating/cooling and no or minimal changes required to current clean down processes.
  6) Cost appropriate for consumer products (when incorporated at the required level). As examples, this means maximum £20/kg (GBP) for an ingredient incorporated at 1-5%, and maximum £250/kg (GBP) for an ingredient incorporated at <0.1%
  7) Technology must not reduce the existing quality of the user’s experience e.g. poor taste, smell etc.
  8) Not be harmful for human use (not classified or suspected to be a toxin, carcinogen, mutagen, irritating to the human respiratory system) with respect to the concentrations used in the final product. Not harmful to the environment (including not being a photo-reactive volatile organic compound).
  9) Ideally offer scope for patent protection with the desired application and format.
  10) Ingredients must meet the required pharmacopoeia or monograph (i.e. Ph.Eur, USP) and supported under REACh where applicable.
