  The water polymer is an ecological product which delivers water to plants through microbes using the age old “thimbleful” concept; it is a non hazardous chemical product. It combines microbial activity with chemical technology. It utilizes molecular science and microbial interaction to control water release directly to plant roots as needed. It is a stagnant and non-volatile solid substance produced through solidifying water, causing fundamental changes in the physical properties of water. Once it contacts dry soil around the plants roots or drip zone, it slowly releases moisture through the common microbe in water polymer and all soil types.
  
  Most of water polymer/ crystals/ water retaining agents in the market place are high bibulous resins. Currently there are two major types of water retaining agents, acrylamide-acrylate cross-linking copolymer and starch-acrylate graft cross-linking co-polymer. Water retaining agents hold no water themselves. It absorbs water from outside and releases it to plants. In contrast, the one that I have as of sample is consist of 98% water and 2% cellulose. It releases water at a slow rate through microbial interaction in soil and provides moisture for plants. It does not evaporate in dry environments or flow or leak in sand. It reaches the roots of plants and releases moisture at a low rate, providing a slow but steady supply of moisture.

  A lubricant/sliding/anti-adherent substance that should permit the compacting of tablets with the active ingredients trichloroisocyanuric acid or symclosene(CAS # 87-90-1), aluminium sulphate (CAS # 10043-01-3) and copper sulphate (CAS N# 7758-98-7) and/or confer the mixture with “non-oxidising” properties (according to Regulations CE A.17 and ONU O.1).
  
  To manufacture trichloroisocyanuric acid or symclosene tablets using compression machines, the substances are added to the mixtures in a feed hopper and compacted in the matrix which will give the shape and size of the tablet by means of pressure (punch).
  
  The type of machine used to manufacture the tablets is the following:
  
  20 g tablets: rotary
  200 – 250 g tablets: eccentric / rotary

  Boric Acid is currently used, which is a substance which will be classified as an SVHC (substance of very high concern) according to the REACH Regulation – future inclusion in Annex XIV – This means that it will be necessary to request ECHA for an authorisation for “use” in order to continue using it.   We are seeking a new walk-in bath design which allows the bather to both enter and exit the bath-tub whilst it is full of water.
  
  Walk-in baths are typically used by the elderly, infirm or those with reduced mobility, to overcome the problems associated with having to climb into and out of a conventional bath-tub. Walk-in baths, as the name suggests, are accessed via a door in the side of the tub, to allow users to literally walk in and out of the bath. Unfortunately this means that the user has to enter the bath when empty, and then wait while the water fills up. Not only is there a risk of the water being too hot or too cold as it enters the bath, but the bather is exposed to the unpleasant / potentially unhealthy chilling environment as they wait for the bath to fill. In exiting the bath the situation is even worse as the bather is now wet and rapidly getting cold, as they wait for the water to drain out before being able to open the door and exit the bath.
  
  No walk-in bath is currently approved by Occupational Therapists, both for the reasons above, and that existing designs still have a small lip/step to enter the bath (so preventing some users from safely using it). We are therefore seeking a novel design to allow the user to enter and exit the bath easily, and to give the impression of entering a full bath of water.
  
  Any new design should provide for:
  • A means to enter the bath, via a walk-in door (at floor level)
  • Instant access to a full bath of water
  • Safe and easy to operate by the bather alone, i.e. not requiring assistance or supervision
  • Retail price close to current walk-in baths
  • Suitability for approval by Occupational Therapists
  • Fit within existing bath / walk-in bath foot-space
  
  Solutions not of interest:

Once in our water system, the bacterial concentration must be decreased and maintained at bacterial concentrations of less than 50 colony-forming units (CFU) per milliliter. We're not dealing with source water from unknown or untrusted sources. However, this water may need to be stored for as long as a year and may be consumed by people at any point during that time.
  
  Simple filtration of the water at the delivery point as it is delivered is not a good option, because the water system is not guaranteed to be sterile, and the bacteria count may increase over time while the water is stored. As high bacterial counts can overwhelm filtration and treatment systems, filters at the dispense point are also not considered a good option..Instead, we are looking for technology to decrease the number of living organisms below 50 CFU per milliliter and prevent further increases in microbial growth. We do not consider water safe to drink unless it contains 50 CFU or less per milliliter.
  
  While our system is complex, the evaluation of the technology will focus on the final potable water holding tank immediately prior to consumption.
  
  CONSTRAINTS
  
  There are two major constraints:
  
  o Your proposed solution must be compatible with a variety of metals including Inconel(TM), and stainless steel, along with a variety of other materials used for seals and tubing; and
  o Your proposed solution must be reliable enough that water quality would not need monitoring more than once per month. Water may need to remain unmonitored for six months or more.

  o A residual biocide is preferred

  Clean water for drinking and washing is in short supply in most of the world. Besides hydration (a critical world-wide need), water is necessary for washing and sanitary needs.
  
  When clothes are washed in a bucket or small tub that contains a minimal amount of water, the wash and rinse water rapidly become burdened with dirt and soap. This organization would like to find a way to remove the dirt and surfactants from the used water -- cheaply -- thus effectively multiplying the clean water for use in rinsing. Ideally, your water-cleaning method could make dirty water potable.
  
  A typical first rinse laundry water contains a surfactant concentration of 0.1-0.2 g per L, a turbidity of ~300 NTU and a pH of ~9. Typical surfactants are anionic surfactants such as linear alkylbenzene sulphonates and non-ionic surfactants such as, ethoxylated alcohols.

  Background:
  The production of aluminium cans is capital intensive and involves numerous process steps, many of which require water and / or water-based lubricants, as a cooling agent, and in particular to wash away fines, lubricant residues, etc prior to protecting, coating, filling and sealing. Typically, 15 - 65 gallons of water are required per 1000 cans (differs between individual plants). Our client is looking to drastically reduce this usage by adopting new forming techniques, novel ‘washless’ or waterless lubrication and / or cooling materials or mechanisms, and closed loop systems whereby the water that is used can be cleaned for re-use in the plant.
  
  Problems:
  - The drawing and wall ironing process generates a great deal of heat / friction (aluminium is reduced from gauge of ~0.25mm to ~100microns), hence the need for cutting oil / lubricants and coolants.
  - The cans must be scrupulously clean prior to coating on both sides (to prevent corrosion and allow printing), hence a 4-stage washing process. This includes the use of etching chemicals such as HF.
  - If employing a closed loop system the resulting waste sludge is classified as hazardous due to the aluminium particulates / fines (up to 30 microns) and various chemicals involved in the production process. This is expensive to remove.
  - The manufacturing process uses a number of solvents and other hazardous chemicals which not only contaminate the waste stream but give off toxic emissions meaning the sites on which plants can be placed are restricted.
  
  Solutions:
  Potentially any technology that allows the production of cans without water, or with as little water as possible, will be considered, including:-
  - Alternative forming techniques, e.g. without lubrication / coolant
  - Improved die technology, e.g. coatings for dies / tooling to operate at lower temperatures
  - Alternative cooling systems / mechanisms, e.g. cooling surface of the dies
  - Novel lubrication systems, such as a combined lubricant and coating, which doesn’t need to be washed off, or is water soluble, or can be removed without water (solutions could include pre-coated aluminium and polymer laminates, etc)
  - Waterless or ‘washless’ cleaning systems
  - New coatings / lacquers with ‘cleaner’ chemical content and avoiding use of VOCs
  - Alternative ‘greener’ mechanisms for etching fines from surface of the can (HF is currently used)
  - Water treatment systems that reduce or remove the usage of chemical agents, as well as the aluminium residues, to render the waste non-hazardous and thus potentially recyclable.
  
  Our client does NOT currently use silicon in their production process due to difficulties with contamination – therefore, we prefer not to use a silicone based solution unless it can be shown to not be detrimental to other processes, or could be removed completely from the can / equipment.
  
  The client is an established manufacturer, well used to developing best practice for their production plants. There is an ongoing economic and environmental requirement to reduce the water usage of their plants, and therefore minimise the impact to the local area. Considerable work has already been done to reduce consumption, but the client is looking for step-change technology to create a plant of the future. They are keen to simplify the production process, remove hazardous chemicals and generally create a ‘clean’ process that minimises use of local resources.   In Europe regulations restricting the use of phosphates and other phosphorus compounds in many consumer detergents are being adopted.
  
  The most widely used detergent phosphate is sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), but various phosphates of sodium, potassium and other minerals are also used for specific applications. The reason why STPP is used in detergents is that it performs several very useful functions. Phosphates are able to soften water by deactivating water hardness minerals through sequestration (holding metal ions) or precipitation (removing metal ions from solution as insoluble materials). By binding the water hardening ions (Ca2+ and Mg2+) it prevents formation of filming and hard water deposits. An important functional property of phosphates is that they contribute to the overall detergency of a cleaner by providing and controlling alkalinity and preventing hard water interference with surfactants. Phosphates also exhibit a deflocculating property that helps to prevent formation of large particles of dirt which are easier to wash from the surface of substrates such as ceramics, glass and metal.
  
  Since phosphates fulfil a number of different functions; it may not necessarily be easy to replace them with a single ingredient formulated in the way STPP is currently used, however a single replacement solution for the problem would be preferred.

  Solutions are requested in the area of geothermal electricity generation. Our range of interest is very broad and includes any technology aspect involved in the electricity generation from geothermal energy with the exception of well drilling and fracturing technologies.
  
  We will be interested in any technology that can bring advantages to the present state of the art of electricity generation from geothermal energy. We are open to several types of collaboration from joint development of promising technologies to acquiring a license of an existing available technology.

  Possible fields of interest are technologies are to increase efficiency in the power generation system, and improved water purification or treatement technologies. Retrofits of existing geothermal power plants are of particular interest, where improved turbine technology or alternative power cycles, could add value. In addition to efficiency gains, improvements could also offer higher reliability and/or lower maintenance costs. Read more

Seeking sensory devices to measure thermal / physical properties of food products in fresh and frozen state

  A sensory device capable of measuring the physical properties of fresh and frozen food products and be suitable for measurement and operation within a food processing environment.

  Details of the Tech Request :
  
  Instrument/device capable of measuring the individual characteristics of a food product. Measurement requirements would be in both fresh and frozen conditions.
  
  The device needs to be able to measure, if possible, the complete composition of the food product but in particular the amount of water present. In the fresh condition this would be the percentage of water and in the frozen condition this would be the amount of frozen water (ice).
  
  The instrument/device needs to be robust enough for use in a food processing environment where it would be subject to low temperatures and a wet and humid environment. The capability for multiple measurements would also be necessary as well as the ability to cover a conveyor belt up to a width of 1.5m wide. Read more
