  Product has to be obtained with a thick texture, more similar to a custard than to a standard yogurt.
  
  Product has to be packed in plastic cups. Other packaging solutions (tetrapack, combipack, pouch) will not fit for our application

  We are seeking a new walk-in bath design which allows the bather to both enter and exit the bath-tub whilst it is full of water.
  
  Walk-in baths are typically used by the elderly, infirm or those with reduced mobility, to overcome the problems associated with having to climb into and out of a conventional bath-tub. Walk-in baths, as the name suggests, are accessed via a door in the side of the tub, to allow users to literally walk in and out of the bath. Unfortunately this means that the user has to enter the bath when empty, and then wait while the water fills up. Not only is there a risk of the water being too hot or too cold as it enters the bath, but the bather is exposed to the unpleasant / potentially unhealthy chilling environment as they wait for the bath to fill. In exiting the bath the situation is even worse as the bather is now wet and rapidly getting cold, as they wait for the water to drain out before being able to open the door and exit the bath.
  
  No walk-in bath is currently approved by Occupational Therapists, both for the reasons above, and that existing designs still have a small lip/step to enter the bath (so preventing some users from safely using it). We are therefore seeking a novel design to allow the user to enter and exit the bath easily, and to give the impression of entering a full bath of water.
  
  Any new design should provide for:
  • A means to enter the bath, via a walk-in door (at floor level)
  • Instant access to a full bath of water
  • Safe and easy to operate by the bather alone, i.e. not requiring assistance or supervision
  • Retail price close to current walk-in baths
  • Suitability for approval by Occupational Therapists
  • Fit within existing bath / walk-in bath foot-space
  
  Solutions not of interest:
  • Faster speed filling and draining as a replacement for entering a full bath (unless in conjunction with other design / technology)
  • Ladders, ramps, hoists or other means to gain access to the bath
  
  The following design solutions have been suggested, but to our knowledge do not exist commercially or do not fulfil all the requirements. However, we would be interested in individuals or groups who could provide further details on developed solutions, or alternative technologies:-

The requirement is for a significant reduction in the volume of the equipment, and so the client is therefore interested in enabling technology and solutions, for example:
  
  - Improved membrane or pre-filtration equipment (current options use almost 50% of the footprint/weight)
  - Options not requiring pre-filtration to achieve the required salinity
  - Alternative desalination technologies to reverse osmosis
  
  The client is interested in a range of solutions that can be scaled up or down, dependent on the application – we are therefore interested to learn of solutions that can process smaller or larger quantities of feed water, or perhaps those that could provide less than 70% reduction, but could have potential for this search.
  
  The following utilities do NOT need to be included in the footprint (instrument/process air, power generation, nitrogen and plant water (if required), but the following DO need to be included (2 weeks chemical storage, any required water storage and tankage).
  
  The company will consider all potential solutions, but is most interested in those solutions that have been proven in some way (including lab concept, pilot plant and industrial application). Potential solutions will need to be tested intensively before deployment, and so those solutions that have already been proven will be of key interest to the company.   We have an urgent requirement for a ceramic slurry coating / impregnation technology, used to produce ceramic filtration media from a reticulated polymer foam substrate.
  
  Currently reticulated polymer foam filters, with ppi (pores per linear inch) ranging from 20 - 6 ppi, are coated with a ceramic slurry by first impregnating via submerged rollers, then spraying a more diluted version of the same slurry composition. When considering a coarse foam a strand thickness of 1-3mm is deposited during the impregnation process, and less than 1mm is added during the spray process. The spray process is a continuous one and the drying is done in batches. The process of spray, air knife and dry, is performed twice on each side of the filter (4-spray process). 30-50% of the total filter weight is added by spraying. The spray slurry viscosity is around 2.7 – 3.1 PaS and the solids content is approx. 60-70% (depending on the end product) The filters are then dried and fired prior to use. The application methods currently used result in a product where the coating is not sufficiently even and homogeneous throughout the filter, leading to possible inconsistent performance. Specifically, the spraying process can result in:-
  
  - Inconsistent weight deposition
  - Inconsistent layer thickness
  - Inconsistent spray patterns
  - Operator induced variabilities
  - Cost and time constraints due to multiple dryings
  
  The ceramic coating compositions currently used are considered satisfactory to meet the very rigorous and demanding conditions the filters have to endure. We are therefore seeking novel technology to increase the consistency / precision of the applied ceramic coating and the overall performance of the filter.   Background
  The majority of consumer products focused on the treatment and relief from common aches, incidental pain, colds and flu are delivered orally, which may result in reduced speed of action due to digestion and associated metabolic action, as well as being somewhat inconvenient and unpleasant to take.
  
  Technologies and approaches are sought that enable treatments to be delivered to the consumer in a convenient and easy to use format, that also offer the potential benefits of being faster acting, lower dose and/or longer lasting.
  
  Technical Requirements
  Transdermal and transmucosal (buccal/sublingual) delivery present several challenges:
  
  • Most active ingredients are large molecules, with some being acidic in nature and having poor water solubility
  • It is necessary to be able to deliver 5-50mg of active within 15 minutes
  • The active ingredient must permeate the skin into the bloodstream, without causing irritation
  • Buccal/sublingual delivery mechanisms need to address potential taste issues, deal with a mucosal and salival environment and not get washed away
  • The approach may require permeation ingredients to help the active reach the bloodstream, either paracellularly (to avoid lipid interference in the tissues) or through the cell membranes themselves.
  
  The target is therefore to access technologies and approaches that can successfully deliver against these challenges, providing new or improved benefits vs. current approaches. Products already on the market for the treatment of common aches, incidental pain, colds and flu, or technologies that deliver topical or localised benefits only are not sought.
  
  It would be advantageous to also demonstrate the following:
  •In-vivo data that shows correlation with in-vitro studies – to demonstrate the action of the solution.
  
  The materials should also meet the following requirements for incorporation into a consumer product:
  
  1) Compatible with typical OTC Pharmaceutical product packaging and expected to be stable under global ambient temperature and humidity conditions for a period of 2 years.
  2) Not require storage or handling under special or inert conditions, e.g. under nitrogen or under oil.
  3) Soluble or readily dispersed in the formulations and not negatively affect or interfere with the properties of other components in the formulation.
  4) Technologies must be capable of withstanding any process stresses e.g. temperature without chemical degradation or any adverse effects
  5) Able to be able to be incorporated into current products using simple batch mixing at room temperature and atmospheric pressure with minimal heating/cooling and no or minimal changes required to current clean down processes.
  6) Cost appropriate for consumer products (when incorporated at the required level). As examples, this means maximum £20/kg (GBP) for an ingredient incorporated at 1-5%, and maximum £250/kg (GBP) for an ingredient incorporated at <0.1%
  7) Technology must not reduce the existing quality of the user’s experience e.g. poor taste, smell etc.
  8) Not be harmful for human use (not classified or suspected to be a toxin, carcinogen, mutagen, irritating to the human respiratory system) with respect to the concentrations used in the final product. Not harmful to the environment (including not being a photo-reactive volatile organic compound).
  9) Ideally offer scope for patent protection with the desired application and format.
  10) Ingredients must meet the required pharmacopoeia or monograph (i.e. Ph.Eur, USP) and supported under REACh where applicable.

  We need a hardware with the same characteristics as linksys (see added information) or to fit the configuration that we have but in an integrated manner in order to give a better image of the product that we are offering.
  
  The objective of the challenge is to assemble all the compounds in one, taking into account consume of electricity. Furthermore, the Network Storage link of Linksys has an internal memory of 8 Mb, it would be convenient to amplify to 1 Gb and eliminate the flash drive memory of Kingston.
  
  To give an integrated solution, unifying the compounds and designing a case, minimum of 2 USB external connexions in order to connect a modem or/ and a USB battery. 3 USB Bluetooth connexions should be possible to attach.
  
  If the solution is not based in linksys, we have to assure that the new device works without problem under Linux Debian 4.0.
  
  Background: We currently have 2 models full configured for us based in the microprocessors gumstick and in the current linksys and running with linux ( gumstix) and l linux debian etch. All the compounds work correctly, but since they are not assembled in a physical way they provoke confusion and they don’t give the feeling of a 100% ended product.
  
  Success criteria: we want to achieve an integrated hardware, whether keeping linksys as base or similar to the conventional and when the cost per unit is less than 100 Euros with accessories (electricity adaptor, hub USB, Bluetooth sticks...). For this, is necessary that the device has the relevant certificates in the case that uses integrated chipsets Bluetooth that meet with European community.

We are open to new additives that enhance any of a long list of properties, or that can enhance the performance of additives already in use.

  Any additive changes the balance of properties for a given plastic. Talc, wollastonite, and glass fibers are the most usual conventional additives. Typically, talc can comprise 10-30% of a polypropylene by weight. While talc produces a stiffer plastic, the resulting composite is relatively dense. Glass fiber can typically provide the same stiffness as talc at lower use levels. While this provides a less dense composite, it presents other challenges -- such as undesirable surface defects.
  
  Our client's focus is on finding new ingredients, modifiers, or agents that improve the balance of properties of a thermoplastic (in particular, a polyolefin) over what is currently used today. The list of properties of interest includes:
  
  o Lighter weight
  o Higher modulus
  o Increase tensile strength
  o Improve impact resistance
  o Improve heat resistance
  o Decrease density (while maintaining the same or greater strength)
  o Minimize shrinkage
  o Improve surface finish, feel, optical appearance, and similar aesthetics
  o Improve scratch resistance and surface hardness
  o Improve stiffness
  o Minimize or eliminate abrasiveness (causes problems during extrusion)
  
  Ideally, your proposed additive would provide new properties in plastics or improvements over anything currently available; or, your additive would maintain current-equivalent properties but at a greatly reduced weight or much lower cost. For example, we would be interested in a technology that would enable a lower-cost polymer resin to replace a higher-cost resin without sacrificing quality, or a resin that would provide equivalent performance to a high-cost resin, but at a lesser quantity.
  
  Early-stage technologies are acceptable, but it is preferred that you have reduced the technology to practice at least at the lab scale.
  
  CONSTRAINTS
  
  Safety is important to us. Any new ingredient should not create safety hazards when inhaled during mixing or cause harm during incineration or processing.
  
  Your additive must work with an extruder (or possibly a compounder). An additive that is too abrasive -- over 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale -- may be harder than the steel in an extruder. We may make an exception for a true nano-scale additive.
  
  No restriction between organic or inorganic additives.
  
  We are NOT currently interested in new polymers (unless the polymer is added to polyolefins), new processes, or new machines.

  We are URGENTLY seeking ingredient and/or process technology to reduce the loss of flavour volatiles from ingredients in a snack food base during manufacture (drying / cooking).
  Ingredients:
  The snack food base contains fresh cooked potato with other ingredients such as vegetables, spices, herbs, legumes, dairy, non-meat protein. Whilst some cooked flavours are created in the cooking process through maillard type reactions, other flavour volatiles are lost (e.g. terpenes). Examples of ingredients known to readily lose flavour volatiles include:-
  Delicate herbs (e.g. rosemary, thyme) Fragrant spices (e.g. lemongrass, cinnamon etc) Other volatiles may include Aldehydes, Alcohols, Esters, Ketones & Phenolics
  Processes:
  The freshly cooked potato is mashed and then blended with a combination of wet and dry ingredients, plus oil, into a fresh dough mixture that is shaped and deposited onto a conveyor belt. It then moves through the cooking processes:-
  1st stage - Atmospheric microwave dryer
  - Rapid dry at low temperature to create the texture of the product
  - Moisture content is reduced from 65-85% to ~15% moisture within 120 seconds
  - Monolayer of product on belt
  - Hot air (50C) blown across product to remove moisture generated by process
  - Product temperature is between 100-120C
  2nd stage - Hot air dryer
  - Hot air (~120C) dryer to complete cooking process
  - Moisture content further reduced from ~15% to 2% moisture content in around 20 minutes
  - Product deep bedded at 10cm depth
  
  Current causes of flavour volatile loss:
  The majority of flavour volatiles of relevance for a positive consumer experience are lost during the 1st stage of drying. Mechanisms of loss include:
  (i) co-distillation through steam generation (Hypothesis)
  (ii) heat degradation (e.g. flash-off at a certain temperature or time-temperature)
  
  Potential solutions
  - Rapid, on-line analytical methodologies which can identify and quantify the lost flavour volatiles,
  e.g. by sampling the oven exhaust streams online, and / or providing feedback control
  - Addition of ingredients (wet or dry) to the snack base at the “ingredient addition & mixing” step which directly or indirectly impact retention of flavour volatiles - process aid or declarable ingredient as long as not perceived as artificial
  o Can be sacrificial (i.e. not present or changed in finished product)
  o Can reduce reaction rates of volatile loss.
  We are searching for devices, methods, chemistry or physics relating to reduction of consumer-relevant flavour volatile loss during rapid dehydration of a potato-based composite snack.

  A new cereal crop, tritordeum, has been developed from the hybridization of pasta wheat and a wild barley species (Hordeum chilense).
  
  With our challenge we are looking for an approach and appropriate technology for screening tritordeum germplasm (a collection of breeding lines) to identify components of nutritional or health relevance. The outcome we look for is the identification of variability in characters present in tritordeum which offer potential for the development of functional food products.
  
  An important aspect is the identity or level of these components should differ from those already present in conventional cereals. For example, tritordeum contains lutein as its major carotenoid antioxidant. Lutein is also the major carotenoid in bread wheat, but is present at a 10-fold higher level in tritordeum which gives the opportunity to develop innovative products which are clearly differentiated from wheat products at the level of lutein content and functionality.
  
  The new cereal resembles bread wheat and its agronomic performance and yield is similar to wheat. However, a number of properties have been identified which offer the possibility of developing new functional food products. Among the properties currently identified are included exceptionally high levels of the antioxidant carotenoid lutein which is strongly implicated in eye health, high levels of soluble fibre, high protein, microelements, variant starch types, etc.
  
  These properties of interest have been identified from the analysis of a limited number of elite lines of tritordeum which have been selected on the basis of having food processing qualities suiting them for specific food applications (e.g. bread, biscuit etc).
  
  The tritordeum lines which have been tested, however, represent only a small fraction of the germplasm (pool of breeding lines) of the cereal which in total numbers some 250+ lines derived from crosses between different parental genotypes. This collection offers a breadth of genetic diversity far exceeding that present in the breeding pool of conventional cereals (whose genetic variability has been reduced during the thousands of years of selection and breeding following the early domestication of these crops.

  (Similar improvements to polyethylene would also be of interest.) Specifically, they want a technology that is better than 10% talc-filled polypropylene in these specific ways:
  - 30% increase in flexural modulus
  - 10% increase in tensile strength
  - 30% increase in HDT (heat deflection temperature)
  - Equal or lower density than 10% talc-filled polypropylene (compound density of < 1.0 grams per /cc).
  Any improvements in these features should not degrade the material in other ways, such as tensile strength, impact resistance, surface finish, and so forth.
  
  BACKGROUND
  Plastic additives always demand a balance between performance and change to physical characteristics. This organization has been working with 10% talc-filled polypropylene (by weight). Talc produces a stiffer plastic and increases heat resistance, but increases plastic density to an unacceptable level for the application.
  Ideally, you have a new additive or a new approach to creating the required improvements to the polypropylene. Your solution may require the removal of some or all of the talc and replace it with another substance in order to achieve the improvements.
  Whatever your proposed solution, it should not adversely impact other properties of the polypropylene.
  Also of interest would be maintaining current stiffness, heat resistance, or density at a reduced cost or quantity.
  
  CONSTRAINTS
  - 30% increase in flexural modulus.
  - 10% increase in tensile strength.

  Background:
  The production of aluminium cans is capital intensive and involves numerous process steps, many of which require water and / or water-based lubricants, as a cooling agent, and in particular to wash away fines, lubricant residues, etc prior to protecting, coating, filling and sealing. Typically, 15 - 65 gallons of water are required per 1000 cans (differs between individual plants). Our client is looking to drastically reduce this usage by adopting new forming techniques, novel ‘washless’ or waterless lubrication and / or cooling materials or mechanisms, and closed loop systems whereby the water that is used can be cleaned for re-use in the plant.
  
  Problems:
  - The drawing and wall ironing process generates a great deal of heat / friction (aluminium is reduced from gauge of ~0.25mm to ~100microns), hence the need for cutting oil / lubricants and coolants.
  - The cans must be scrupulously clean prior to coating on both sides (to prevent corrosion and allow printing), hence a 4-stage washing process. This includes the use of etching chemicals such as HF.
  - If employing a closed loop system the resulting waste sludge is classified as hazardous due to the aluminium particulates / fines (up to 30 microns) and various chemicals involved in the production process. This is expensive to remove.
  - The manufacturing process uses a number of solvents and other hazardous chemicals which not only contaminate the waste stream but give off toxic emissions meaning the sites on which plants can be placed are restricted.
  
  Solutions:
  Potentially any technology that allows the production of cans without water, or with as little water as possible, will be considered, including:-
  - Alternative forming techniques, e.g. without lubrication / coolant
  - Improved die technology, e.g. coatings for dies / tooling to operate at lower temperatures
  - Alternative cooling systems / mechanisms, e.g. cooling surface of the dies
  - Novel lubrication systems, such as a combined lubricant and coating, which doesn’t need to be washed off, or is water soluble, or can be removed without water (solutions could include pre-coated aluminium and polymer laminates, etc)
  - Waterless or ‘washless’ cleaning systems
  - New coatings / lacquers with ‘cleaner’ chemical content and avoiding use of VOCs
  - Alternative ‘greener’ mechanisms for etching fines from surface of the can (HF is currently used)
  - Water treatment systems that reduce or remove the usage of chemical agents, as well as the aluminium residues, to render the waste non-hazardous and thus potentially recyclable.
  
  Our client does NOT currently use silicon in their production process due to difficulties with contamination – therefore, we prefer not to use a silicone based solution unless it can be shown to not be detrimental to other processes, or could be removed completely from the can / equipment.
  
  The client is an established manufacturer, well used to developing best practice for their production plants. There is an ongoing economic and environmental requirement to reduce the water usage of their plants, and therefore minimise the impact to the local area. Considerable work has already been done to reduce consumption, but the client is looking for step-change technology to create a plant of the future. They are keen to simplify the production process, remove hazardous chemicals and generally create a ‘clean’ process that minimises use of local resources.
