  Good, restful, refreshing sleep often eludes us. There are many aspects to this: sleep that is long in coming, waking during the night, and sleep of short duration that leads to morning sleepiness and lack of alertness during the day. We are looking for foods, ingredients, or other ways to enhance natural sleep and perhaps work in conjunction with other sleep-producing methods such as light, sound, touch, temperature, or other OTC products.
  
  Science suggests that hormones and neurotransmitters are involved in effecting sleep. For example Serotonin levels rise at night and Melatonin is produced to regulate sleep, furthermore it is seen that high levels of GABA are required to reduce adrenalin at night.
  
  Therefore the potential solutions could thus include:
  
  o Agonists for melatonin, GABA, adenosine, 5-HT2A or galanin
  
  o Actives or products that increase potency or effectiveness of existing sleep enhancing ingredients, actives or behavioral programs eg solutions that provide a feeling of relaxation, sedation or calming.
  
  o Herbs from traditional medicine, enzymes, ingredients, additives, component, blend, extract or device. (It would be preferable for you to have synergistic data with another sleep aid).
  
  o Ingredients for buccal membrane or gum application.
  
  Our focus is general -- not on sleep apnea or any specific medical condition.
  
  Currently, we are NOT looking for:
  
  o Herbs without a sustainable supply chain
  
  o Teas
  
  o Topical products (unless your active can also be used in food or in combination with food )
  
  o Aroma/fragrance products
  
  o Devices for monitoring sleep
  
  o Anything synthetic and not viewed as a food (i.e. can only be produced via chemical reactions etc)
  
  o Old or discarded pharmaceutical technology or product
  
  o Prescription medicine (e.g. sleeping tablets)
  
  CONSTRAINTS
  
  You will need to have a good explanation for the mechanism of action.
  
  You will need to present potency data and toxicity data; but because your solution is probably novel, we understand that you may not yet have clinical data.

  We are actively seeking novel technologies or devices with proven or provable efficacy that assist in “helping babies sleep”. This solution is aimed at infants under 3 years old (primarily 0-18 months) whose erratic sleep patterns affect both their sleep and that of their parents. There are a variety of products commercially available with claims of improving infant sleeping behaviour including special toys, light and sound based solutions; however these assertions are often unsubstantiated and our client is specifically interested in technology that delivers a solution proven and endorsed by experts (e.g. paediatrician, mid-wife, etc).

  Details of the Tech Request :
  
  Devices could be relevant for any of the multiple development stages that infants go through, and could be to encourage the infant to fall asleep, as well as return to sleep once disturbed. Products that include digital connectivity are of particular interest – e.g. using monitoring to guide the parent with intelligent decision making to improve the sleep of the child. Current devices are not generally ‘intelligent’, applying the solution irrespective of the infant’s state – solutions that can monitor multiple parameters of sleep patterns and behaviour, give feedback to the parent (e.g. via smartphone) and then apply a solution in response to that state would be of key interest. Research / clinical data on infant sleep that could be used with proprietary algorithms to control devices is also of interest, as are technologies to apply proven methodology and support parents in the execution (i.e. not just a book coaching the method).
  
  Our client is a multinational manufacturer of clinically tested products for infants and is keen to find a technology that can be easily or readily adapted into their product range. We are therefore interested in solutions that are either already on the market, close to entering the market or at a fairly late stage of development where proof of concept has been established.   Aromachology studies the effect of aroma upon human psychology. Specific scents stimulate the olfactory pathways in the brain and can sub-consciously induce feelings of reassurance, confidence, relaxation, happiness and well-being, amongst other emotions. It differs from Aromatherapy, which is associated with the use of essential oils to enhance wellbeing in a physical way.
  
  Our client is seeking scientific evidence (academic or commercial) that such an association exists between aroma and emotional state, and is keen to connect with experts working in this field. The company is also keen to find commercial partners who understand how to incorporate this knowledge/technology into a range of products.
  
  Technology could be applied to textiles, fibres, plastics, papers, packaging or fragrance dispensers for use in the following applications:
  
  - Hospital environments to reassure patients undertaking treatments – alleviate stress / depression
  - Reduction of anxiety associated with flying, by introducing scents into aeroplane cabins
